Air-Oxygen Decarburisation (AOD)
GROWMECH Metal Refining Knoverters (MRKs) are metallurgical tools with advanced systems for economical refining. They are custom designed for professional steelmakers as an improved Air-Oxygen-Decarburisation converter for stainless steel and alloy steels making of diverse grades.
Our range of MRK designs reduces operating costs by using air and nitrogen. They maintain consistency of process and reduce gas and ferroalloy consumption while increasing the level of purity of the metal through their microprocessor-based gas flow control system.
AOD Process
AOD is an improvement on Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). It is used to produce stainless steel and other high–alloy grades that contain highly oxidizable elements such as Cr and low carbon.
- Decarburisation
- Control of partial pressure of CO
- AOD process dilutes the injected oxygen with Argon or Nitrogen.
Using only EAF results in:
- High cost refractories because the process requires high temperatures
- Use of only small amount of stainless steel scrap
- High cost as a result of Low carbon FeCr used for alloying
- Time-consuming because of double slag practice
